Merchant Story: Sureguard Australia

Sureguard Australia makes animal containment and pest repellent products, and it has manufactured them in Australia since 1994.

Its range covers the Pingg-String electronic fence and wireless dog fences. It also includes Scarecrow repellents, snake repellents and the Pro-Tech 5 solar fence.

Pet owners, farmers and horse keepers can all find a fit, and the shop ships worldwide except to the USA.

Every yard is different, so the site also offers online quotes for dog, cat and possum barriers.

Why Did Sureguard Need an Odoo 8 to Odoo 17 Migration?

Sureguard’s shop and back office ran on Odoo 8, nine major releases behind Odoo 17.

Fifty-six WillowIT modules had built up around it, and 22 were Sureguard-specific custom modules.

Not every one was still worth keeping.

Some were obsolete, and some did work that Odoo 17 already does out of the box.

So the job was to sort out what the business still needed and move only that.

Customer records and the claims process had to come across intact.

A loyalty programme was also on the wish list, yet Odoo 8 held no loyalty data to bring over.

How Webkul Ran the Odoo 8 to Odoo 17 Migration for Sureguard

Webkul ran the Odoo 8 to Odoo 17 migration on Odoo.sh. Webkul validated data, modules and business flows along the way.

Sureguard supplied its custom module source. Webkul picked what to migrate by the work each module did.

Which Custom Modules Moved in the Odoo 8 to Odoo 17 Migration?

Only the modules the business still needed made the trip.

Webkul reviewed the WillowIT modules and moved what the business relied on.

Sureguard dropped obsolete modules, and standard Odoo 17 features took over where they already did the job.

It adapted the Sureguard-specific modules from Odoo 8 to Odoo 17 in the same way.

Data migration ran alongside, so required business data stayed with the modules that use it.

Claims Module Migration

Customer claims are handled inside Odoo, so that process had to survive the move.

Webkul moved the Claims module from Odoo 8 to Odoo 17 and kept the claims process in place.

Later on, the team fixed problems with the emails the Claims module sends and checked how Odoo delivers them.

Loyalty Programme Setup

Sureguard bought Webkul’s Odoo Website Loyalty Management module for its store.

No old loyalty data existed, so the programme started fresh on Odoo 17, where loyalty is a standard feature.

Next, the client asked that opening points match each customer’s buying history.

Webkul prepared the setup to take those starting balances from past sales.

Afterpay Payments on the Website

Sureguard chose Afterpay as an online payment method.

Webkul configured the Afterpay payment acquirer for the Odoo 17 website once the client bought it.

Zip was also on the table, so Webkul read its API documentation and estimated a custom Zip payment acquirer.

Online Quotation Payment and Quote Pages

Fence systems sell through online quotes, so the payment step after a quote matters.

Now a card payment made after a customer accepts a quotation lands correctly in Odoo.

Webkul customized the online quote page too and took the approved changes live.

Website Fixes and Custom Features

Smaller changes to the shop came with the project.

Public reviews now work for one required product, and other products keep the existing review flow.

Webkul also fixed display and behaviour problems in the shop carousel.

Country of Origin details now show for public visitors and on mobile.

Tracking code sits in the site head and just after the opening body tag. Microsoft Clarity now records visitor sessions for analytics.

Webkul’s Odoo Website Cart Settings module was part of the Odoo 17 setup as well.

Testing After the Odoo 8 to Odoo 17 Migration

After the move, the team reviewed the migrated workflows and tested the Odoo 17 environment.

Reported problems got fixes, and approved fixes reached production.

This kind of Odoo customization carried on well past the version jump itself.

Results of the Odoo 8 to Odoo 17 Migration for Sureguard

Sureguard Australia now runs its shop, claims and quoting on Odoo 17 with only the modules it needs.

Old data and claims handling moved across, and loyalty can open with points based on real sales history.

Afterpay is set up as a payment method, and card payments after an online quote land correctly in Odoo.

A current release on Odoo.sh now stands in place of an Odoo 8 setup with years of unused modules.

Webkul has run the same kind of move for other Odoo merchants, including a US hardware supplier that upgraded to Odoo 19.
