    Product Families and Categories in Akeneo

    Introduction

    Akeneo PIM is a Product Information Management tool it is free and open-source which basically help in the fast growth of any eCommerce business.

    PIM centralizes all the information at one place and manages them by this it helps in managing the time and cost.

    In this, you can centralize the product information from different sources and then improve the quality and then export the product to different eCommerce channels, POS, Mobile application.

    A product family is the collection of attributes that will be the same for all product related to that family. After creating the attribute and attribute group we assign them into a product family.

    Example: When you are going to create a product like Clothes you can make the attribute like image, color, and size. You can assign these attributes to the family.

    A product category is the classification of the products. After creating the product we assign a category to the product. You can classify your products in different categories and their sub-categories.

    Example: When you are going to create a product, you can assign a category to this product. Assume you have created category clothes then you can assign product in this category and you can also make the subcategory like Men, Women, and Kids.

    Difference between Product Family and Category:

    Family:

    •  A family is a set of attributes to enrich your products.
    • A product will belong to only a single family.

    Category:

    • Categories are used to classify your products.
    • You can assign several categories to a product.

    Create Product Families in Akeneo

    A product family is a set of attributes that represent the products that are from the same family. While creating a product we add a product to a family it inherits the all the attributes present in that family.

    To create a family in Akeneo we have to go Setting -> Families. Here you have to enter the family code and click on the save button.

    Here you have to fill some details like attribute used as the label, attribute used as the main picture, Label translation. You will get other options.

    • Attributes
    • Variants
    • History

    Add Attributes in Product Family:

    You will get two option here to add attributes in attributes family.

    • Add by Groups – You can add attributes by attribute groups.
    • Add Attributes – you can add attributes created by you from other families.

    After adding attributes in attributes family we can delete the unnecessary attributes.

    Create a Family Variant:

    You can add a family variant for variant products in Akeneo. The family variant will allow you to determine the structure of your products with variants.

    After clicking on the add variant icon the following properties are required to create a family variant.

    • Code – You can add a code to identify the family variant.
    • Label – You can add a product label.
    • Variant levels – You can choose a variant level. You can choose either 1 level or 2 levels.
    • Variant axis level – Variant axis are attributes of the family which identify the variant product in the product model.

    After fill, the details click on the save button.

    After making the family variant you can set the attribute for the variant product. You can drag and drop common attributes to variant attributes.

    Label Translation: In this, you will get different locale option by which you can translate your family variant label code.

    After click on the save button, you can see your variant product label like this.

    Create Product Categories in akeneo

    Product categories used to allocate products in a category. You can have one or more than one categories and sub-categories in Akeneo. If you create a category it is always a part of the root category.

    You can click on the create a new category for create a category.

    After it, You have to enter the code and node values of the category.

    You can also create the sub-category of a category. For it, you have to right click on the category for which you want to create a sub-category. Enter the sub-category name.

    After entering the name click on the save button and you can see a sub-category is added to your main category. You can make the chain of category and sub-category as you need.
