{"id":99643,"date":"2017-10-17T14:46:07","date_gmt":"2017-10-17T14:46:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/webkul.com\/blog\/?p=99643"},"modified":"2017-10-23T09:56:00","modified_gmt":"2017-10-23T09:56:00","slug":"reduce-size-docker-container-images","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/webkul.com\/blog\/reduce-size-docker-container-images\/","title":{"rendered":"How to reduce the size of Docker container or images"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>I recently played a lot with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.docker.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Docker<\/a>, while setting up an Unique Demo per customer for our Odoo Modules like <a href=\"http:\/\/odoodemo.webkul.com\/?module=odoo_marketplace&amp;version=10.0&amp;lifetime=120&amp;lout=1&amp;custom_url=\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ODOO Marketplace Demo<\/a>\u00a0, <a href=\"http:\/\/odoodemo.webkul.com\/?module=affiliate_management&amp;version=10.0&amp;lifetime=90&amp;lout=1&amp;custom_url=\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ODOO Affliate Program Demo<\/a>, etc. It was nice experience for me, I was able to create Docker images and containers very easily, thanks to the awesome &amp; detailed <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.docker.com\/get-started\/#setup\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">documentation on Docker site<\/a>.\u00a0Everything was working right out of the box!<\/p>\n<p><strong>Problem 1:<\/strong> But after few weeks I got a low disk space problem on that server, I realised that there are too many images present on that server (as I rebuild images when doing any updates\/fixes) when I tried to remove unused images, I got an error message as they are the parent of new image. i.e I can`t remove those unused image anymore as they are linked to new images now \ud83d\ude41<\/p>\n<p><strong>Problem 2:\u00a0<\/strong>Also, as I`m using <a href=\"https:\/\/docs.docker.com\/engine\/userguide\/storagedriver\/selectadriver\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">overlay2\u00a0storage driver<\/a>\u00a0, I found that a few GB tied up at\u00a0<code>\/var\/lib\/docker\/overlay2<\/code>:<\/p>\n<pre><strong>root@ip-172-30-0-216:\/# du -sh \/var\/lib\/docker\/overlay2\/<\/strong>\r\n\r\n<strong>49G \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0 \/var\/lib\/docker\/overlay2<\/strong><\/pre>\n<p>After spending few hours on this problem finally I got a fix for this, which today i`ll share with all via this blog.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Follow the steps:<\/strong><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>STEP 1:<\/strong> Take backup of <strong>all<\/strong> your current(active) images as a tar file, using import\/export method. Benefit of doing it &#8211; is it will <strong>not<\/strong> preserve the history(parent-images) &amp; meta-data of container, i.e size of image will reduced around 40% (depending on the layers it have)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<pre># Create a new container using that image\r\n<strong>docker run -tid --name=&lt;UNIQUE-CONTAINER-NAME&gt; &lt;IMAGE-NAME&gt; bash<\/strong>\r\n\r\n# export the container to a tarball\r\n<strong><span class=\"crayon-e\">docker <\/span><span class=\"crayon-v\">export<\/span> <span class=\"crayon-o\">&lt;UNIQUE-CONTAINER-NAME<\/span><span class=\"crayon-o\">&gt; -o image-name.tar<\/span><\/strong><\/pre>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>STEP 2:<\/strong> Now,\u00a0stop the docker service, and\u00a0<code>rm -rf \/var\/lib\/docker<\/code>. Alternatively, you can stop the docker service, move the directory (as a backup), and start the service again.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<pre># Stop docker service\r\n<strong>service docker stop<\/strong>\r\n\r\n# Remove docker folder\r\n<strong>rm -rf \/var\/lib\/docker<\/strong>\r\n\r\n# Start docker service\r\n<strong>service docker start<\/strong><\/pre>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>STEP 3:<\/strong> Now, import back all your saved docker images in step 1 as:<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<pre># import back the saved image tarball\r\n<strong><span class=\"crayon-o\">cat image-name.tar | docker import - image-name:latest<\/span><\/strong><\/pre>\n<p><!--more--><\/p>\n<p>That`s it.<\/p>\n<p>In this way, I saved few GBs of my server disk space, but still my task is not over I`m still trying to do more optimisation on docker`s image level, i`ll try to share that also if I found any good workaround\/hack for that.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>What I learned while Working on Docker is &#8211; &#8220;<strong><em>Building docker images is pretty pretty easy but building small docker images is not always easy.<\/em><\/strong>&#8220;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><strong>TWEAK:<\/strong> To commit\/build any image directly from container we can use following command to get small-sized image (when we don`t want any history\/meta-data):<\/p>\n<pre><strong>docker export &lt;CONTAINER-ID\/NAME&gt; | docker import - &lt;UNIQUE-IMAGE-NAME&gt;<\/strong><\/pre>\n<p>Thanks for reading this blog\u00a0!!!<br \/>\nI hope it will help someone in the future.
