Scope helps to store separate values, which comes into play only when they are necessary.<\/p>\n<h1>Type of Scopes &#8211;<\/h1>\n<p>CSS Variables follows the &#8220;Lexical or Static Scope Conventions&#8221;. CSS Variables have two types of scopes &#8220;Global Scope&#8221; and &#8220;Local Scope&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Let&#8217;s look into both of them &#8211;<\/p>\n<h3>Global Scope<\/h3>\n<p>A Variable which is declared in the the global scope can be accessed anywhere in the CSS. A variable in global scope is declared or defined inside the <code>:root<\/code> selector&#8217;s block. An explanatory code is shown below &#8211;<\/p>\n<pre><span style=\"opacity: .6;\">\/*Defining a Variable in Global Scope*\/<\/span>\n:root{\n  --primary-color: #3A6FE2;\n  --accent-color: #FFFFFF;\n}\n\n<span style=\"opacity: .6;\">\/*Accessing a Variable defined in the Global Scope*\/<\/span>\n.wrapper{\n  background: var(--primary-color);\n  background: var(--accent-color);\n}\n\n<\/pre>\n<h3>Local Scope<\/h3>\n<p>The Variables which are declared within the code block of a particular selector are scoped locally in respect to the selector. An explanatory code is shown below &#8211;<\/p>\n<pre><span style=\"opacity: .6;\">\/*Defining and Accessing a Variable in Local Scope*\/<\/span>\n.visibility-high{\n  --font-size: 24px;\n  --leading: 1.8;\n  font-size: var(--font-size);\n  line-height: var(--leading);\n}\n\n.visibility-low{\n  --font-size: 18px;\n  --leading: 1.6;\n  font-size: var(--font-size);\n  line-height: var(--leading);\n}\n<\/pre>\n<p>In local scope, Variables can be declared and accessed with the same names in different CSS blocks. As the Variable declared in one local scope cannot be accessed from any other CSS code block.<\/p>\n<p>A Local Scope always have an access to the variables which are declared in outer or global scope.<\/p>\n<p>CSS Variables can be &#8220;accessed first and declared later&#8221; while writing css code, which makes the CSS Variable Scoping even more powerful and usable.<\/p>\n<h1>Hoisting in CSS Variables<\/h1>\n<p>CSS Variables are <em>hoisted<\/em> and they are moved on the top of the CSSOM before rendering the styles of respective HTML elements in the browser.<\/p>\n<pre><span style=\"opacity: .6;\">\/*Accessing a Variable First and Declaring Later*\/<\/span>\nbody{\n  background: var(--bg-fill);\n}\n:root{\n  --bg-fill: green;\n}\n<\/pre>\n<p>The code above just works perfectly, and that is how hoisting works within CSS.<\/p>\n<h1>An Example<\/h1>\n<p>We can use CSS Variable Scope as an advantage in different case scenarios, You can just see an example below which demonstrates a basic theme toggle switcher.<\/p>\n<p>[codepen_embed height=&#8221;422&#8243; theme_id=&#8221;light&#8221; slug_hash=&#8221;EERYJK&#8221; default_tab=&#8221;css,result&#8221; user=&#8221;nitishkmrk&#8221;]See the Pen &lt;a href=https:\/\/codepen.io\/nitishkmrk\/pen\/EERYJK\/&gt;CSS Variables #2&lt;\/a&gt; by Nitish Khagwal (&lt;a href=https:\/\/codepen.io\/nitishkmrk&gt;@nitishkmrk&lt;\/a&gt;) on &lt;a href=https:\/\/codepen.io&gt;CodePen&lt;\/a&gt;.[\/codepen_embed]<\/p>\n<p>We have just created two scopes, first one is for the bright theme which is <code>.theme-bright<\/code> and the second one for a dark theme which is <code>.theme-dark<\/code>. We have used the same variable names in both the locally scoped blocks.<\/p>\n<p>We have accessed the variables reference values in respective class blocks.
