Performance Optimization in the NextJS

As NextJS already provides the inbuilt support for the optimization. But there are some enhancements which we can do on our end also.

In this article, we will look at several approaches for performance optimization in the Next.js app. but before that, We need to create the Next.js project.

NextJs Stable Version

Using the Next.js latest stable version, Next.js already has the inbuilt support of tools like automatic static optimization, code splitting, image optimization, font optimization, and prefetching.

And, There are many third-party scripts as well present optimizing.

Prefer to use the latest stable version, because as the latest next.js version arrives these tools get more and more optimized. As of right now, the latest stable version of Next.js is 14.2.2

Dynamic Imports In NextJs

Dynamic Imports also known as code splitting, refers to dividing the large chunk of code into the smaller chunks as a javascript module.

This method helps to defer the loading of the client component. And only load the client component and library when they’re needed.

The benefits of using dynamic Imports are as follows :
1. Improved Site Interaction time.
2. Low bounce rates and better site conversion rates.
3. Faster the page load time.

NextJs Multizone’s

The Multizones method is a technique, in which multiple apps, can be used on a single URL app.

The multiple zones technique is implemented by the Vercel built-in functionality or HTTP proxy.

At a high level, It allows you to multi-zones, and define different parts of your application as independent “zones”, each with its own set of configuration options.

As a Developer, you can define the multiple zones of your applications and merge them into a single application by using the rewrites  Method.

NextJs Image Optimization

In the next.js, we can use the Image component, which is the Next.js inbuild Image component.

It automatically optimizes the image, with lazy loading, and compression, resizing based on the device size.

In the Image component, you can also set the priority of the Image, the Image with high priority will load first and lazy loading will automatically disabled for images.

Caching In NextJs

Caching helps to optimize the performance of your application, by using the caching method /hooks.

Like useCallBack() and useMemo() hook, these hooks cache the expensive function call or expensive calculated value,

These are some concerns you need to understand before using these methods/hooks. Unwanted caching and unaware caching lead to slowing down your app performance.

So be aware when you using caching in your web application.

ISR (Incremental Static Regeneration) In NextJs

ISR (Incremental Static Regeneration) allows you to use static generation on a per-page basis, without needing to rebuild the entire site.

It helps in updating and creating content on the site without the need to redeploy the site.

Lighthouse Support

Lighthouse is a Google Free tools/Chrome extension. Which helps to audit the performance of the web application.

It calculates the performance of the application based on multiple aspects like SEO, Performance, Accessibility, and much more.

LCP (Largest Contentful Paint)

LCP (Largest Contentful Paint) is one of the third Core Web Vitals metrics, It defines the time taken by the browser to load the page and appearing the largest content element on the screen.

A good performance LCP score ranges from 0-2.5, and 2.5 – 4.0 is considered to need improvements, and greater than 4.0 is considered poor.

Virtualization Tools

In the web application, it’s a normal requirement to display a large list of data on the webpage.

When the size of the data gets large like 1000+ data it slows down the application, for that concern we use techniques like window-virtualized.

A library like npm @react-virtualized, provides the support for displaying the largest list of data in an optimized manner in the web application.

Serverless Functions

Serverless functions are also known as the Function-as-a-Service (FaaS). It only executes the specific piece of code as per the event triggered.

Unlike traditional server-based applications, it doesn’t require permanent server instances for handling incoming requests, instead, it executes on demand and also scales up as per requirement.

Static Site Rendering

In static site rendering, pages get re-rendered at the build time of the build.

Re-rendered means the creation of the page is already completed on the server end before the site gets launched or accessed by the user.

When the user tries to access the page it gets the generated page which surely loads in a faster time.

This process is also known as hydration. getStaticPath() and getStaticProps() these methods are mainly used in static site rendering.
