Odoo 20 Migration Guide: Upgrade Safely Before Support Ends

Odoo 20 has just been launched at Odoo Experience 2026 in Brussels (September 24–26). If your business runs on Odoo, now is the right time to plan your move.

The launch date is not the real deadline that should worry you most.

This guide explains in simple words what is new in Odoo 20, why the real clock is already ticking for some users, and how to upgrade without breaking anything.

Odoo 20 focuses on making everyday work faster with AI built into the system. Here are the key improvements:

• Smarter AI Agents: Ask questions in plain language (for example, “Show me the last purchase order from this supplier”) and get answers or actions without searching through menus. AI can now create, update, and act on records across apps.
  
• AI Connection (MCP Server): Enterprise users can connect external AI assistants directly to their Odoo data.
  
• Better apps: Important updates across Accounting, Inventory, CRM, POS, Website, Payroll, and more.
  
• New mobile look (“Frost” design): A cleaner, faster, and easier interface for phones and field work.

Before deciding when to move, it helps to know how Odoo supports its versions. Your current version’s support end date is what really matters.

• Standard support lasts three years: Every major version gets helpdesk support, bug fixes, and security updates for three years from its release.
  
• Only the three most recent versions are supported at any time: Once a new major version ships, the oldest of the three previously supported versions drops out of standard support.
  
• Extended support exists, but it’s limited: After standard support ends, you can pay for extended support, which includes helpdesk support and bug fixes, but only “depending on feasibility.” It is not a like-for-like replacement for standard support, and it isn’t free.

Staying on an old version does not only mean missing new features. Eventually, it means running your business on software that Odoo is no longer actively patching.

It is easy to think the Odoo 20 launch date is the main date to plan around. For most businesses, it is not.

According to Odoo’s supported-versions documentation, Odoo 17’s standard support ends in September 2026 – around the same week Odoo 20 is unveiled.

Odoo 18’s standard support runs until September 2027, and Odoo 19’s until September 2028.

If you are on Odoo 17, September 2026 is your real deadline – not the date Odoo 20 becomes available.

Waiting for Odoo 20 to “settle” could mean waiting past the point where you are still on a supported version.

Here is a detail that catches many businesses off guard. Once a version’s standard support ends, it can still be used as an upgrade starting point for only six months afterward.

In practice, once Odoo 17 falls out of support in September 2026, you have roughly until March 2027 to use Odoo’s standard upgrade path from Odoo 17.

Miss that window, and moving forward becomes a bigger, more manual, and more expensive project, not a routine upgrade.

This is the deadline that quietly slips past most businesses because it is tied to your current version’s end-of-life date, not to when the newest version launches.

Moving your data to a new version is usually the easy part. The harder part is your custom modules and integrations – the connections between Odoo and your other software.

Two changes are worth planning around:

• The old API is being replaced. Many tools talk to Odoo using an older method called XML-RPC. Odoo is moving to a new JSON-2 API, so your integrations may need updates.
• The screen framework keeps evolving. Custom screens and widgets built for older versions may need changes to work correctly in Odoo 20.

Your data will move on its own. Your custom work needs to be checked first.

A safe migration is never just a version switch. It follows a clear, tested process, first tried on a copy of your system, and only moved live once everything is tested and working.

Step 1: Analyze and plan

We review your current setup and draw up a clear plan for the entire migration, covering every module, customization, and integration you use.

Step 2: Migrate your modules

We move all your modules into a separate test database first, called the QC database, so nothing touches your live system yet.

Step 3: Migrate your data

Your data, static and dynamic, is moved into the same test database next, ready for checks before it goes anywhere near your live system.

Step 4: Test everything

We run smoke testing and scenario testing on the test database, then fix any errors this turns up.

Step 5: Run a quality check

In a developer database, we confirm that data flows correctly and lines up properly with the new Odoo version.

Step 6: Move to your live system

Once the test database passes every check, we move the migration to your real, live Odoo database and monitor it closely afterward.

• Upgrading the live system directly without testing on a copy first
• Forgetting to check whether third-party modules are available for Odoo 20
• Migrating old, messy data as-is instead of cleaning it beforehand
• Skipping user testing and training before go-live
