How to use workbox service worker in webpack for WooCommerce Addons

What is workbox

Google developed a JavaScript library called Workbox that makes it easy to build offline web applications and websites. It provides a collection of helper libraries and modules that simplify common tasks, such as caching assets and handling network requests.

Developers can manage how network requests are cached and served to users using Workbox. This tool allows caching of static assets such as images and CSS files, as well as dynamic content like wordpress rest API responses.

What is Service Worker

A Service Worker is like a helper for a web page that does things in the background. It can make web applications work better even when you are not connected to the internet. This includes features like push notifications and more.

Service Workers are written in JavaScript and run independently of the website’s main thread. They can intercept network requests made by the web page and respond with cached content, even when the network is unavailable.

This allows web applications to continue functioning even when the user is offline or on a slow or unreliable network.

Install required dependencies

We are using there workbox-webpack-plugin package for generate the service worker.

npm install workbox-webpack-plugin

or by yarn –

yarn add workbox-webpack-plugin

Configure workbox

Add the WorkboxWebpackPlugin to your webpack configuration file, typically named webpack.config.js. Here’s an example configuration that uses the GenerateSW plugin:

module.exports = {

    new GenerateSW({
            clientsClaim: true,
            skipWaiting: true,

};

The GenerateSW plugin generates a new service worker file and adds it to your build directory. You can configure the woocommerce plugin with various options, such as the name of the service worker file, the URL patterns to cache, and the expiration time for cached resources.

Register the service worker

After generating the service worker file, you must register it in your application. In your main JavaScript file, you can add the following code to register the service worker:

}

This code registers the service worker at the URL /service-worker.js. You can change the URL to match the name of the service worker file generated by Workbox.

Once you’ve completed the above steps, you can test the service worker by running your application and checking the network tab of your browser’s developer tools. The resources in the Workbox configuration are cached by the service worker. Make sure to check them.
