Use of Actions in Adobe Photoshop

As a UI Designer, it is most important to deliver a better UI product with more Efficiency and more Speed as well. But sometimes we have to face some problems like doing the repetitive work(In Adobe Photoshop) and it is also important that in our community we should follow the rule of DRY (Don’t Repeat Yourself). So, we’ll have more time to deliver something new every time.

So, How can we get relief from that continuous repetitive work?

And the simple answers is to use Actions in Photoshop.

What are Photoshop Actions?

Actions are some pre define processes we record to implement to fulfill bulk work requirements.

Photoshop Action file extension is“.atn”

Adobe allows you to record actions for your repetitive tasks.

Suppose we have around 100 photos of different stance & we want to crop it and add watermark on those or wanna add some effects, then the best way to do it is to make an action for it.

this is just a one example you can implement to make you work process more easy & useful.

So, let’s check out the whole process to record actions & how to implement it:

Step 1:

Just go to windows → Actions (Alt+F9 for windows & option+F9 for mac) and record an action.

Step 2:

Click on the "Create New Action icon" to start recording it.

Step 3:

Name the action so, you can easily recognise it for future use.

as soon you click on that “Record” button you’ll notice that an recording icon on the bottom of the same actions palette is activated.

Step 4:

Start your proceedings to complete the action.

Now you’ll take any action on your current activated document, it will get recorded & it will save your every step.

like on the example above, its saving my every step, to implement it in future use.

Step 5:

Now stop the action from getting recorded.

Action implementation:

To perform action for bulk images you just need to perform a process called “batch process”, so let’s get started with how to implement it:

Go to File → Automate→Batch

on clicking this option you’ll have a popup window with the options of Batch process.

It will let you choose the Source folder(to get images) & Destination folder(where the rendered images will be exported by photoshop batch process).

Whole process:

As you can see above my current action “tumblr-effect” is already selected in the action option & now you’ll just need to click “OK” & your batch process will get started to implement it.
